Hello. : Hello. You can get green bowel movements when feces transits too quickly through the colon. Bile makes the stool green. As the stool makes it's way through the colon, water is reabsorbed back into the body, giving firm feces. There is also enough time for the bile to be metabolized leading to brown colored stool. When the feces moves too quickly, usually the bowel movement is loose or liquid.  It is normally recommended that if you have a change in your bowel habitus that you advise your doctor.  I am not sure about your pain. However, the left side of the colon (descending) can sometimes be involved in conditions that cause diarrhea. Take care.

Cause?: Any conditions which cause the stool to transit too rapidly through the intestines can lead to green, moist stool. On the other hand eating green leafy vegetables can lead to green stool.  Green cabbage, lettuce, peas, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, green salad, green leaves, celery & green beans as well as food that contains green food coloring & some medications can lead to green stool.

Check your diet!: Too much green, leafy food in your diet may change the color of your stool and has nothing to do with your labor.

Normal: Depending on his diet, normal stool can be soft or more firmly shaped, brown, light brown or green. See a Dr if he is having stomach pain, or watery diarrhea for more than 3 days, with or without blood. Keep a food diary and see if you can identify the food or supplement that causes the green color. Green poop can result from meals with green vegetables, like spinach, kale, broccoli, chard, etc.

Probably not: Most diarrheal illnesses related to contaminated food are short lived and happen soon after eating the food. However, sometimes diarrhea from contaminated food or water can last longer. If it persists beyond 3 weeks you should see your doctor. Make sure you are staying hydrated.

Most of the: time green stools are caused by the intake of green colored food and sometimes medication (IRON is the classic example)  "Rapid Transit" can also give the stools a greenish color from BILE still undigested . This is seen with HIGH FAT intake...

ive had green stool for the past two weeks. the other day i had to force myself to use the restroom and noticed a small amount of blood in it. i think that was due to me forcing myself to go. should i be concerned ?

Probably not: a small amount of blood in the stool is probably benign if it's hard and has to come out with force. In general, if you see blood anywhere from your body, it is good to know where it is coming from and why. This is more important the older you are. If it happens once or is small amount, it is worth seeing a doctor on a non-urgent basis to get a diagnosis. You will know then what to do if it recurs
