If you live in a polluted city it may be hard to avoid inhaling the polluted air.

The color: may mean infection of the small airtubes ("bronchitis) and may indicate that a chest x ray is needed! Are you a smoker??  Contact your Primary Care Professional and arrange for an evaluation. This needs attention!

Could be normal: Whitish greyish mucus sounds like it could be normal discharge.  If your discharge doesn't smell fishy and you don't itch, it's likely okay and normal.  Women have discharge every day.  Abnormal discharge is discharge that smells fish or that causes itching.  If you're concerned about possible std exposure a check up at a local clinic can likely ease your mind.

Not good: Need far more information and a detailed exam and possibly some imaging studies and exams of sputum.  Do you smoke?  Work around toxic materials you could inhale?  Are you immunosuppressed?  See a pulmonary doctor and get diagnosed and treated if necessary.

See doc: If you are coughing up large amounts of mucus, I would advise you to see your physician, especially if it is causing you pain.  He or she can do a full history and physician and determine you just need rest and fluid or if you need antibiotic treatment as well.
