hi, been battling with gout and ita in the elbow. been to the doc twice this week and just gives me an injection. seems to work for 48hrs?

Need diagnosis confi: I am not convinced at age 33 you have gout. See a rheumatologist to confirm the diagnosis and get  on a  long term program

Not likely!: The elbow is affected, but not without other joints in the lower extremity also being stricken.  The most common cause for elbow swelling is olecranon bursitis! the are many causes for this. The most\ serious is infection.  Have him see a doctor.  Gout really cannot be completely controlled by diet. Improved-yes.  Controlled, no!

i've got a burning pain in my shoulder  arm and elbow for the past  year, the pain is very intense , can it be gout ?

Possible: Although unlikely. The more likely diagnosis is a tendinitis involving muscles and tendons encompassing both the shoulder and elbow.

Most likely: Most likely this is also gout. The olecranon bursa is a small sac that covers the elbow joint. Gouty inflammation commonly occurs in that area. Other possibilities includes traumatic bursitis or septic (infection) bursitis. Tight control of gout by keeping the blood level of uric acid low may prevent further attacks.

Yes: Many types of things including certain foods such as red meat and processed foods and sugary drinks,  stress and medicines such as aspirin can cause your uric acid levels to increase.  And certain diseases and conditions increase the risk of gout including untreated high blood pressure and chronic conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and kidney and heart diseases.

Urgent care.: ASAP would best be accomplished by getting to an urgent care facility. Some required laboratory work may be needed. Prescriptions can then be issued on the spot, once your conditioned is some how verified.

Possibly: You have symptoms which could be serious and should see your physician.  He/she will listen to you, do a physical examinarion, run some tests, and let you know what's going on.

Why avoid the pills?: They are relatively safe and likely one of the more effective treatments. The other option is changing diet. I often find this to be inadequate in my patient population.
