Gout!: My personal doc is Clinoril (sulindac). It has less GI side effects than the historically used Colchicine (taken until symptoms resolve or GI upset). As a secondary, I am happy using Prednisone for those sensitive to nsaids.

Watch the proteins: Decrease your protein intake (especially lean meats, organ meat, fish, shellfish, chicken) decrease alcohol and increase water intake.  
Your doctor may also perscribe medication to help decrease your uric acid.

Gout is destructive : Gout is a hereditary problem caused by a deficient enzyme. Your body cannot break down uric acid. Uric acid build up causes injury to your cartilage. There are different meds used to control uric acid and to control the inflammation caused by the uric acid. These are powerful medicines and should be orchestrated by you doctor. They have huge side effects and need to be administered carefully.

Combine or compare: To the best of my knowledge no studies have been performed in comparing the 2 in treatment of gout. Cataflam, one of the formulations of diclofenac may be advantageous as it has a fast onset. In my experience, a short term course of oral naprosyn (naproxen) along with topical diclofenac (volraren) works better.
