my shoulder hurts and my rotator cuff. i've had a cortisone shot and now it hurts again. what can i do to help it. for relief. what helps?

Shoulder: For now use ice and an anti inflammatory. Get with your doctor and determine if you need a mri.

Yes: The day after the shot it should hurt and within a another day if the steroid is in the right area it should start to feel better  The first day lidocaine is used to numb the area so the next day is when it hurt  Keep moving it and if increased pain or redness then see provider

See answer: Faciak flushing is a common side effect of steroids. This reaction is more common in women and is seen into up to 40% percent of patients. This can begin within a few hours of the injection and generally lasts only for a few days and on occasion longer depending how long the steroid remains in your system. No specific treatment is warranted.

Consider surgery: If you have a partial rotator cuff tear as documented by an MRI scan, and you have had thorough conservative care (physical therapy, rest, nsaid's, and a cortisone injection), you may to consider surgery to address your ongoing pain.  Arthroscopic shoulder surgery should be able to take care of the problem for you.  Discuss with your orthopaedic surgeon re your best choice.

Steroids: This is a good question. While steroids do impair the immune system, i don't anticipate a true risk of making you more susceptible for infections, unless you have some other underlying disease.

Calms inflammation.: Nobody uses cortisone anymore unless you are a horse.  Everyone knows what it is though so we usually call steroid injections "cortisone".  This is essentially equivalent to putting Ibuprofen right at the source of the inflammation.  The inflammatory response is a chain reaction in our body.  Steroid works a bit higher on the sequence of reactions and stops the inflammatory response.

i have a pulled right pectoral muscle. will a cortisone shot stop the pain for awhile?

Accepted Answer

: A cortisone shot would not be the best for pain or treatment of the pulled pectoral muscle. A ketorolac injection (as long as your kidney function is good) would help with pain and inflammation however and it does not need to be directly into the injured muscle. Ice, applying diclofenac gel and rest are helpful as well.

It would be...: Extremely rare. You need to find the real cause.  An orthopedist would be a good start.  You did not mention what is causing arm disuse! pain! numbness! etc.

Yes: Paradoxically patients can have a flare following an injection of a cortisone like compound.   I am sorry but I do not have a good explanation for this and if it happens once likely to occur again in my experience.
