do i have to take valtrex (valacyclovir) every day or just when prodrome symptoms arise? i have ghsv1.

Depends...: It all depends on how you were instructed to do so.If your outbreaks are only occasional and you are referring to the oral herpes( or commonly known as cold sores) then you can take when you get symptoms. However, if you are getting them too often and your doctor prescribed it for prevention then take it every day.If that is the case you might need a higher dose when you get sores appearing again.

Herpes simplex: As a general rule valacyclovir usually modifies the frequency and severity of outbreaks of genital herpes, but this is not invariable and in some patients may not have any appreciable effect.

A : A viral culture of the lesion may yield hsv. Also, since it has been about 4 weeks since your post, you can check your antibody levels. Check both igm and igg for hsv-1 and hsv-2. This will document exposure. Repeated testing showing a falling igm and rising igg would implicate a recent hsv infection. Herpes will often cause a residual neuralgia (nerve paid) long after the lesion has healed.

Also, a person with only type 2 can catch her first case of type 1 anywhere on her body. The location depends on where the virus enters her.

Yes.: Phlebectomy (microphlebectomy) is often routinely performed in conjunction with GSV ablation.  These procedures are done under local and tumescent anesthesia and are usually done in the office. Both of these procedures can also be performed independent of each other.

Genital herpes HSV1: These are crucial differences between GH due to HSV1 vs HSV2:  lower recurrence rate (40% never have a second outbreak), less asymptomatic viral shedding, hence low risk of sexual transmission. Virtually all GHSV1 is acquired from oral sex, very rare cases from vaginal sex. Still best to inform prospective partners, but actual transmission risk is very low. Probably no need for ongoing treatment.
