GI transit issues?: Gut motility is standard, as are most body functions, within a bell curve distribution. However, ileus or obstruction for whatever cause may pathologically distend a portion of the intestine. If present, this requires immediate attention. On the other hand, some people have visceral hyperalgesia--e.g. they feel gassy but may not have excessive gas retention (as seen in Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

is it normal to have moderate pressure in bladder while urinating 1 week post op partial hysterectomy? neg urine culture. reason for surgery was pelvic/bladder pain and bladder pain is worse now after surgery. also having lots of gas pains?

: Anytime one has problems persisting after his surgery, particularly if they are not improving, the first course should be to the surgery to perform the procedure. It is important to make sure there are no complications of the surgery. They can also check to see whether you have a urinary tract infection or some other obvious cause of the symptoms. Good luck.

Maybe not just gas: Bloating, irregular stools, and fullness may reflect diet (check your fiber intake), alterations in the population of healthy gut flora we each carry, food intolerances, maldigestion due to problems of the small intestine, pancreas, or biliary tree, changes in GI motility (how well your GI tract mixes and moves food along), various infections, and even irritable bowel syndrome. Testing is easy.

Gas: The chest pains can also be from gaseous bloating of the stomach or from esophageal cramping. To prevent excessive gas buildup, avoid gassy foods and beverages and take simethicone 1/2 hour after a meal. Drinking hot water helps break down gas promoting transit down the intestinal tract and out the rectum. Don't force yourself to belch as you only keep swallowing air. Start eating a light diet.

lately when i eat a certain cheese, i get really bad gas pains and i end up having a bowel movement. what could this be?

Lactase: Lactase, the enzyme that digests the dairy sugar lactose, is an inducible enzyme. This means that as we age, and we eat less dairy products, our body makes less of it and it becomes harder and harder for us to digest lactose. This leftover lactose can ferment in our digestive system causing feelings of bloating and changes in our stool. Taking over the counter lactase can help!

i'm 2 weeks postop laparotomy for ovary removal for cysts and endometriosis. my issue is severe bowel/gas pains and i'm not constipated. normal?

No: Not normal. But in the case of severe endometriosis with bowel adhesions it can occurs. If you have fevers or bloody stools or anything would see you doctor immediately. Still would give them a call since you should likely feel a little better by now.

Constipation: Sounds like you're very constipated.  In the long term, adding more fiber to your diet and drinking more water are essential to prevent this from happening. For now, try taking an over the counter stool softener like Miralax (polyethylene glycol). You can take this twice a day until you are moving your bowels, then taper it back to once daily or once every other day to keep regular.

should i switch my 2 week old formula to sensitive if she's having bowel movements every 2-3 days and spitting up and  gas pains?

Possibly: If symptoms are severe enough especially with colic than you might want to try switching to a different formula. Try soy based as well as sensitive formulas. If those still cause problems try a more refined formula like nutramigen. Although sometimes infants can go 4-5 days between bowel movements normally. But they shouldn't be having severe gas pains and spitting up. Try smaller feeds too.

i'm 4 weeks post colonoscopy and my digestion has changed. lots of gas pains in afternoons and more frequent bowel movements. could this be related?

Yes: if you read the newspapers there Are multiple reports of intestinal infections after procedures performed with scopes that are contaminated
