why do i develop so much gas after eating?

Diet & swallowing: Most gas is either made in the gut from the food you eat (ie, beans), or it is swallowed in the food you eat (ie, carbonated beverages, airy foods like popcorn or rice cakes). Try to limit these foods. If you are anxious, you may just be swallowing more than most, & in doing so, unintentionally swallow more air thus causing more gas to be put in your gut that you have to deal w/ from above/below.

Yes: Eating stimulates a reflex called the Gastrocolic reflex and motility of the colon is stimulated. You may feel the need to pass gas or move your bowels.

Post eating: Are you sure that you're not having symptoms after eating diary products(lactose intolerance)?  If not, you may have a type of irritable bowel syndrome. A loose bowel movement usually follows the cramping in IBS. A hyperactive gastrocolic reflex is another possibility. Taking an antispasmodic like dicyclomine 1/2 hour before the meals prevents the cramping. See gastroenterologist as needed

Reflux: If the opening into the stomach from the esophagus is loose then contents from the stomach can regurgitate ( burp) up and you will taste what  is in there. Also if you swallow a lot of gas when you eat or even talk that has will bubble out. Some things like soda make gas. All of this can be called gastro esophageal reflux disease also know as gerd. Usually minor but can be serious. Check with md.

i am thin and i eat boiled white potatoes everyday to try and gain weight yet it seems like i am getting a lot of gas after eating potatoes. can white potatoes cause a lot of gas and if so why?

: Almost any food eaten by someone that is sensitive to that food can cause gas. If you are trying to gain weight, increasing your calories by eating a variety of foods more frequently would likely be a better plan. There are calorie-dense foods that can be eaten. Perhaps seeing a nutritionist for guidance on calorie-dense food and eating more frequently might be helpful to you. Best of luck to you!

Digestion: You likely lack enzymes necessary to digest the food. I have no vested interest in this product but do recommend "digest extra" sold at the vitamin shoppe. It has all the enzymes your body needs for food breakdown and usually does the trick.

Basics: Stomach noises are created by its churning action.The walls have muscular elements that churn/mix the air &amp; contents with stomach acid in preparation for transit through the intestine. Everyone swallows air during feeds &amp; some more than others. Anal gas emissions are triggered by the air you swallow &amp; the gas produced by gut germs feeding on the leftover gut debris. Your diet affects the amount.
