It means little: Fundal height generally approximates but does not always correlate to the actual gestational age. The measurement that you describe, I am assuming, is an ultrasound that is also an approximation.

About 12 weeks: It begins to peek out from under the bones in your abdomen and it's height can be followed.

Nonspecific: If your dates are good stick with 30 weeks.  If not so sure split the difference 31 weeks.  The fundal height is subject to interpretation and not specific.  It is just a general idea.

Macrosomia: Every baby grows at slightly different rates. U/S measurements are "dated" on an average growth rate, so any given time may be larger or smaller than average, but still be normal.  Sometimes, the U/S may be correct, but since bleeding can occur with pregnancy, you may just have gotten pregnant a month earlier than you calculated.

Baby  growth: The fundal height is good for trending over the course of your pregnancy and fh is +/- 2-4 cm = weeks once past 20 weeks. Most doc's will start measuring fh at 20 or 24 week visit. U/s has a 10-15% error of calculating baby weight throughout pregnancy and assigning dates varies with gestational age.

i am 36 weeks. ultrasound showed 6lbs1oz. my fundal height is measuring behind at 35 cm. it's been perfect until now. is this normal when baby drops?

Yes: Ultrasounds and fundal heights can only "guess" at weights and gestational age unless done serially. once the baby drops into the pelvis generally at 36 weeks gestation the fundal heights are "iffy".

As the pregnancy: progresses, in the later weeks, softening of the lower uterine segment, allows the head to move down in the pelvis. This is called engagement. As this occurs the fundal height drops in the last few weeks, as you have seen for yourself.

Everyone is differen: The cm to week measure doesn't really apply till 24 weeks and greater.  The location of the umbilicus to top of uterus, is a crude, old standard that may not apply to everyone.  If your bellybutton is lower than another, it will not be an accurate measure.  Don't listen to your friend, or the stranger at the mall, listen to your care giver when it comes to "am i the right size?".

Measuring tape: Use the centimeter side and measure from the middle of the pubic bone (place the zero there) to the top of the curve of the uterus. In general the number of centimeters is about the number of weeks once beyond about 15 weeks.

should your fundal height measure to gestational age or fetal age? i.e. if 25 weeks from lmp should it be 25cm?

Accepted Answer

Not specific: Depends on the womon.  There is a period of time during the pregnanacy when fundal height is predicatble for gestational age, but not necessarily at 25 weeks.
