Single score: Don't put too much emphasis on a single score. It'sa snapshot in time, if you are concerned, repeat the test.

Complicated diet: Avoid prunes and prune juice, spinach, watermelon,leafy green vegetables, fav beans, dates, raisins, peas and broccoli. Also avoid meats, peanut butter, tofu, infant cereals and other cereals fortified with iron, flour tortillas, anything cooked in a cast iron skillet. Avoid citrus with meals as it increases iron absorption. Your child will need to have limited iron intake as well as vitamin and essential mineral  supplements under the direction of a nutritionist with experience in thalassemia.  It is essential that diet be guided with nutrition consultation.  Tea with meals suppresses absorption of iron.

Vegetarian diet?: I am not sure why she has low protein--from poor intake or disease process, so this should be evaluated by her doc. In term of diet--i assume she is a vegetarian? Beans, nuts, and coconuts, asparagus, kales, spinanaches are good sources of protein. Avocados are excellent as well. If she can eat eggs, eggwhite is very high protein as well. Consult doc/nutritionist. Good luck.

why is my b12 only 280 when i eat a lot of meat, fruits vegetables and dairy. i understand that 280 for a young adult who's not vegetarian etc. is low. i am also low b12 symptomatic. thank you?

: B12 level can be low due to 2 reasons in your case.
Either there is difficulty in absorption in the small bowel(Malabsorption) or defect in the stomach where a protein called intrinsic factor is produced, the latter is required for B12 absorption in the intestines. Do you have any other illness, such as stomach disorder or intestinal disorder??? Taking antacids daily is another possible cause.

low ferritin levels with colitis. colitis is fine at the moment and no blood but i can't seem to increase my ferritin. this is level 9. taking galfer 10ml a day. i eat good veg and fruit. what else can i do to help increase my levels?

: Iron is sometimes difficult to absorb, especially when there is inflammation present. To help the iron get absorbed, take it with 500mg of Vitamin C-this creates the acidic environment needed for iron absorption. If your iron studies remain low after trying the Vitamin C, you may need to get a dose of IV iron-your doctor can arrange that if it proves necessary. Best of luck to you!
