These processes are responsible for attaching muscles and ligaments to the spinal column.

8 weeks: Most people are doing well by about 8 weeks.  The nice thing about an isolated fracture of the transverse process is that the stability of the spine is not affected and so there are not set restrictions.  The down side is that they can be quite painful.

Fracture: The transverse processes are the little wings that stick out from the side of the lumbar vertebra.  Small muscles attach to them.  Any fracture takes 6-12 weeks to heal.  Sometimes these little parts of the bone don't heal back normally, but this is rarely a problem.  I recommend my patients to hold off on heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks after an injury like this.

At least 6 weeks: Fractures take at least 6 weeks to heal, then count on atleast 6 more weeks to regain the strength to the area.  A transverse process fracutre is not a bad fracture, it does not arequire surgery.

Need to image: The pain should have decreased substantially by 3-4 weeks if simple healing was proceeding, but wonder if more has occurred.  Would definitely get both MRI and CAT scan of area to ascertain bone fragments and even a problem with disc rupture in area.

Fracture: Mechanism of injury ; amount of energy will determine soft tissue damage. Perhaps you've just happened to have less soft tissue damage, contained deep to the superficial, more visible fascias layer.

Transverse process : Most transverse process fractures occur with muscle injury. The muscles will usually heal slower than bones. As activity is increased as you feel better, muscular strain causes pain. This type of pain will usually get better as the muscles acclimate to increased movement.

~8 wks.: Transverse process fractures of vertebrae take 8 wks and occ. Longer to heal. As long as there is no other fractures in the vertebrae( and these are commonly isolated fxs) than they routinely heal uneventfully and w/ minimal treatment( bracing/ pain med). See your md; these fractures are sometimes associated w/ internal organ injuries when signifigant trauma is involved. Gl!
