Pepto bismol?: Did you take any pepto bismol. This can turn your stool black for a day or so. As far as the pain it sounds like a gallbladder attack but more info is needed. If pain returns. See your MD.

Black stool: Black stools are usually associated with bleeding within the GI track.  See your doctor or go to an emergency room for an evaluation.

Starvation stools: After a period of no oral intake your stools can have an abnormal color while reintroducing feeding.  If your grandmother does not have pain or obvious blood in her stools, it is safe to observe for now and keep her doctor informed as things get better or if there is any change for the worse.

Black stool can: be caused by blood, or intake of iron, charcoal, or bismuth compounds.  If you are also having abdominal symptoms, you should see a doctor to determine whether the two symptoms are related.

The : The stool colors we get really concerned about are red (blood from colon), black (blood from small intestine or stomach), or white (liver is not working well).  Other things besides blood can cause black stools such as iron, pepto-bismal, black licorice and blueberries.  Unfortunately, with your other symptoms, I do think you should give your doctor a call.  They will be able to test your stool for blood and work up your illness from there depending on the result.  Good luck!

Blood: Black stools or melena, is always considered blood. It usually comes from the stomach or the beginning parts [higher up in our jargon] of the small intestine. Bleeding from colon usually comes out red. Black or red stools need to be investigated.

Depends on the cause: If black stools are due to bleeding from the stomach it may take few days with the treatment of underluing cause like gastric erosions, ulcers etc.If they are not due to bleeding and from eating certain foods, meds and taking iron than it will clear if you stop the iron or the foods which are causing it.
