i need help! how do i know if i have food allergies or food poisoning?

See a doctor: Both problems can be serious. Food poisoning occurs when food is spoiled or contaminated with bacteria and presents as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes fever. Food allergies can have similar symptoms but may also include hives itching, breathing problems. Both can be serious or even life threatening. See a doctor immediately or even go to ER.

this is the second time in two weeks i've thrown up after eating a salad. could it really be i have food poisoning or do i have some sort of allergy?

Accepted Answer

Probable: Unless both occasions were from the same batch of salad when spoilage would be suspected, you had likely anaphylactic reactions to something in the salad. The chances for anaphylaxis (a life-threatening form of allergic response) are higher when there are itching, flushing, and /or hives.  If you can't figure out which ingredient in the salad caused your problem, consult an allergist.

Neither, may be: You don't tell us how severe your diarrhea was. Still, a one time diarrhea may be of unknown cause or food poisoning. Diarrhea due to food allergy would be recurrent and usually start at a younger age, recurrent diarrhea may have other causes and needs to be investigated.

Not that I know of: If you can avoid the allergenic foods, the answer is no.  However if you work in a seafood factory and the steam from the seafood causes a serious allergic reaction whenever you work, then it may be considered a disability.
