No: If you live in a community where Fluoride has been placed in the municipal water supply, it has already been provided at the optimum and safe level.  In general, too little Fluoride and you get cavities more easily.  Too much, and fluorosis can occur.  Your water supply should be perfect assuming you don't use some type of home filtration system or process.

can children have too much fluoride? my friend told me she's worried about fluorosis and excess fluoride for her children due to toothpaste and fluoride in the water. is this a genuine concern and something i should be worried about?

Yes : Yes children can have too much flouride. Flourosis is caused by injesting too much flouride. When the permanent teeth erupt they can appear to have molted brown and white spots. Remember flouride is pescribed by dentists  as a supplement if it is not added to your drinking water. Also flouride is a major part of toothpastes and mouthrinses these days. In addition, flouride is found naturally in some foods, drinks and household products. In high quantities flouride can be toxic. Be sure to carefully monitior how much flouride your child takes daily and talk to you family dentist about your concerns. Good luck.

Spotting: Fluorosis presents as white to brown spotting on your enamel. These spots are softer than the rest of the enamel, so they wear out more easily, resulting in a mottled appearance of teeth. For example, in cape verde, the water has high fluoride, so nearly half the individuals born there have fluorosis.

Demineralization can lead to caries (cavities), but may arrest itself and remain a "dark" spot.

Yes: Fluorosis, or discoloration in the teeth from excessive Fluoride exposure, can be easily taken care of. Sometimes just whitening the teeth can remove much of the stain. In-office whitening is stronger and has helped many patients find a better blending of the coloration. There is also a procedure using microabrasion. Bonding, veneers or crowns may be necessary for more severe cases.
