Time: Fluorosis is a condition that can happen when children between the ages of 3 months and 8 years are overexposed to fluoride, usually from swallowing too much toothpaste. Tiny white permanent streaks or spots appear on the enamel of the teeth. These streaks can't be removed, limit Fluoride intake and wait until the effected teeth (usually baby) fall out.

Varies with person: With a very mild fluorosis, a special type of mild polishing procedure may work. A remineralizing product called mi paste may help. Professional tooth whitening is an option. Severe fluorosis can require veneers (or crowns if there are large fillings or cavities). Talk with a dentist who can do an exam and give recommendations for your specific situation.

Cosmetics: Some fluorosis can be lessened via various bleaching techniques. Sometimes a mild abrasion paste can be used to remove the superficial layer of enamel, which is usually the most affected by these opaque white spots. Sometimes more aggressive cosmetic procedures, such as the placement of ceramic veneers, is the only way to correct this. Often, it's best to leave mild cases of fluorisis alone.
