is it normal to get a floater in only one eye? i normally always have floaters in both eyes. i have no other symptoms though. should i be concerned?

Flashes and floaters: Most flashes and floaters are benign but annoying.  They tend to disappear over a period of weeks to months, without any medication.  If the number of floaters starts to increase, or if you start to see a dark black curtain in your vision, then see your local ophthalmologist immediately!

1/: No. Floaters do not cause pain.. However, you should see your ophthalmologist for this, as it is a signal that you may have a tear in your retinal, which may require treatment with a laser.

Floaters: This may represent a condition known as vitreous floaters. This is due to condensation and liquefication of 'jelly' (vitreous) in the back of the eye. However, new or an increase in the amount of floaters should be evaluated by an eye care professional.

Vitreous gel changes: Usually small black floaters are not serious unless there is a problem with the vision,  eye pain or history of eye injury or surgery , or if  they increase suddenly, causing blurred vision , in which case they would need an eye evaluation.  They may occur earlier in people with high  myopia  and are,caused by a shrinkage of  the vitreous gel inside your eye .

No : Astigmatism is refractive error in which the focusing power of your eye is not completely symmetrical. Floaters are condensations of proteins in the gel of your eye (the vitreous). The 2 are not related.

Should move. : This is from a posterior vitreous detachment.  The gel inside your eyes, vitreous, has partially liquefied & is pulling away from the retina which lines the back of your eye. This is a normal with aging.  This causes floaters. The only concern is if it begins to pull on the retina & tears it.  Retinal tears can lead to retinal detachment & blindness. Go to your doctor immediately if you start to.

Floaters: Not usually, astigmatism is a refractive error resulting from the shape of your cornea (window to the eye).  Floaters are typically in the back of the eye in the vitreous cavity.  Floaters should be monitored by an eye care provider as these could be an early sign of retinal detachment.  The risk is low but a detailed eye exam is always recommended in pts with floaters.

can physical over exertion via exercise or losing one's temper cause eye floaters?

Accepted Answer

No: No, but the incident or cause of floaters is a posterior vitreous detachment.  This is a situation where the vitreous(jelly) of the eye detaches (not a retinal detachment), it then "crumples" up leaving dots, spots, strands of blurry vitreous; i.e. The "floater".  You should have an exam to ensure the incident did not tear the retina, which could lead to a retinal detachment.
