how are nutrients processed in the body?

Nutrients: This is hard to answer in 400 words, but basically foods are broken down by enzymes in the Gastrointestinal tract, then absorbed through the lining, distributed to the blood which delivers them to the cells of the body.

does our body store extra nutrients if we have to much?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Mostly it will stored excess energy in the form of fat and sugar compounds.  Some nutrients, especially fat soluble ones will be kept for a long time but you will deplete the stores of water soluble nutrients in a much shorter period of time.  The body can handle starvation for a period of several weeks to perhaps 5 weeks before things happen which can be dangerous.

Yes: Malabsorption is the inability of the small intestine to absorb nutrients. Causes include celiac sprue, whipple's, and a bunch more. Maldigestion is the inability of the pancreas to break down food for absorption. They may be linked together as "malabsorption".

Sometimes: It appears yes.  Like in the case of pica, where people will have the urge to consume non-food(like clay) items in the setting of iron deficiency.  It is thought that the body's preparation for increased nutritional needs, like salt, might drive pregnant women's cravings for things like pickles.

i asked a question prior and it was interesting, i wanted to ask does your body know what its eating, or it has the same process for food everytime and splits up the needed nutrients from the food?

: It’s mostly the latter. The body always breaks down each type of food the same way, but there are storage mechanisms for various types of nutrients. For example, if you eat too many calories, the body stores the excess carbohydrates as glycogen in the liver or as fat in the adipose tissue. Conversely, if you eat too few calories, your body can begin to break those same tissues down.

Some thoughts...: A vegan, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, and lacto-ovo-vegetarian are all types of vegetarians. Because some things (calcium, vit. D, vit. B12, protein) are harder to get if a vegetarian eats no egg or dairy, a vegan has a much harder time finding all the nutrients she needs to stay healthy. However, a lacto or ovo-vegetarian must be wise enough not to overeat fats from yolks and milk or butter.

: Yes, basically right. This is digestion. Enzymes in saliva, the stomach, and intestines break down foods into chemicals that are absorbed into the bloodstream and then taken up in tissues &amp; organs for normal functioning, growth, and all human processes. Unused food components and various chemicals leftover or produced in these processes are then passed in stool and urine. Google "human digestion".
