the last time the phlebotomist did a finger stick it was very painful is there a a way to avoid the pain?

Not really!: The skin of the fingers have a lot of nerve endings and as a result are very sensitive.  If the finger sticks are done rarely, then you may ask your doctor for a topical anesthetic to numb the finger.  However, this is not practical for frequent finger stickers like diabetics, as the anesthetic drug has side effects. Warming fingers up prior to the stick helps the blood flow and this may help.

Yes: I emphasize with you. I hate to prick myself too because of pain. Blood can be taken from vein in the arm  unless they only want to test your hemoglobin or blood sugar .

FBS: It takes more than one fasting blood sugar reading to determine if you have diabetes mellitus. The A1c gives an idea of what your blood sugar has been like over the last 3 months. A finger stick FBS value and your A1c may not align totally.

Yes: Any time you puncture the skin you risk an infection.  So always clean your hands before you stick it.

Apples & oranges: A1c measures the amount of hemoglobin that is glycosylated which is roughly correlated to mean blood sugar over a 90 day period? A finger stick is a real time measure of actual blood glucose. They both have great value in managing diabetes.

No ER: Don't go to the er. If you have no plan in place for this with your physician then please contact them. This is not a life threatening emergency.

Likely high: You may want to contact your doctor to get examined and to confirm whether you indeed have diabetes by testing on your HgbA1c level as well.  Since untreated diabetes can lead to serious consequences , it needs be treated as early as possible via lifestyle changes and /or medications. The question is why did you test yourself in the 1st place? Did you have suspicion that you might have diabetes ?

Yes, conclusive: Insti is a "third generation" test for antibodies to HIV types 1 and 2. All such tests are usually conclusive by 6 weeks and always by about 8 weeks. Negative results 6 and 7 months after the last possible exposure are 100% conclusive.
