Being scared: Most likely not. But the doctor who did the test was not sure and did the exact next right thing. Plan or do a biopsy.  The only thing to do now is to breathe and wait. The answer will come quick enough.

Low risk: If you do not have  family history of early onset breast cancer, you have a low risk at your age. You appear to have been evaluated properly. Follow your doctor's advise about follow up care.

Why guess...: ...When you can be 100% certain as soon as the pathology results return? More often than not, when it looks like a fibroadenoma, it turns out to be just that.  Of course, if we were 100% certain, we wouldn't need to do a biopsy. This "limbo" time can be very difficult--try to occupy your thoughts with anything but the biopsy. I hope it all turns out well!

6 months ago a breast ultrasound noted a birads 3 lump likely to be a fibroadenoma. repeat ultrasound today has shown slight increase in size but no change in shape. i am 14 weeks pregnant, can this be why? i am now birads 4 & devastated. cancer??

BIRADs 4: Since your BIRADs score went up to four it appears the lesion has a higher chance of being malignant and A biopsy is more likely recommended. It is known that pregnancy can cause an increase in size of a breast adenoma.  If you haven't been followed and advised by a breast surgeon, please consult one now for evaluation, advice and follow-up.

It is a benign tumor: Fibroadenoma is a common condition among the young females. The diagnosis is frequently made on physical examination and confirmed with a mammogram. A biopsy is not required unless it starts to grow and increase in size. So you can watch it for 6 months up to one year and note any change in size and have a follow up visit with your doctor at least once yearly.

Benign tumor: Fibroadenomas are common noncancerous (benign) tumors of the breast.  They frequently appear in older teenagers and young adults.  Get it checked out.  If it is confirmed to be a fibrioadenoma you have the choice of surgical removal or close followup.

Very Unlikely: Fibroadenomas are benign tumors of the breast.  They are quite common and are not precancerous.  Very rarely there have been cases reported where a fibroadenoma has been thought to turn into a tumor called a cystosarcoma phyllodes of the breast which is a very unusual type of breast cancer.

Better Safe Than...: Rarely, what is presumed to be a fibroadenoma is a sarcoma-like tumor (phyllodes tumor).  Therefore, if the tumor is growing on the 6-month follow-up study, excision will be recommended. Remember: common things happen most commonly. Chances are it will not grow and be of no concern.
