can fibroadenomas turn into breast cancer?

No: Fibroadenomas are benign tumors and cannot become malignant.  There are rare types that can be locally aggressive within the breast, called phyllodes tumors.  If you had this type of fibroadenoma, we would recommend surgical removal.  Otherwise, fibroadenomas can be left in the breast once diagnosis is established, provided that it is not large or painful.

Left breast lump: Best way to tell is to have an ultrasound of your breast to determine what the lump is.

im 40 years old and had my first mammogram. i was told i have a fibroadenoma and it has to be biopsied. i have no breast cancer in my family. also, is there any pain associated with it? should i be worried

Just get biopsy: Most of these are benign but the only way to make sure is the biopsy. To answer your question about worrying, I suggest that you not get worried, but just get the biopsy. Please be aware that most women with breast cancer do not have it in their families and most breast cancers are not painful. That said, this is not likely cancer, but you need to follow the advice to get the biopsy.

Should be fine: Low dose, is safest, good choice. Other options such as Mirena IUD, and Nexplanon, have no estrogen and also could be good choices.

NO , no indication: At the age of 31 no indication for mammography , unless have strong suspicion due to   brca i ; !   ( genetic ) even after 40 routine screening mammography id not improve in survival in recent  canadian study  ( controversial ref ny times article and my comment ). Go for regular scheduled check ups

Will have some idea: Correct diagnosis is possible only by pathological examination  ( need  biopsy , and pathologist makes it ).

Fibroadenoma: Fibroadenoma is a benign well circumscribed tumor with two components, epithelium and stroma. Only very rarely is the epithelium found to be atypical enough to be called carcinoma in situ and much more rarely to have invasive cancer. Another tumor called phyllodes Tumor can resemble Fibroadenoma closely and does have malignant variants. Good pathology exam is useful here. FNA or core bx OK.

Breast surgeon: The surgical management of a breast mass must be made one on one as this is a complex issue where one simple answer can not be applied to everyone. Consider discussing with a breast surgeon. Given your family history of breast cancer consider genetic cancer screening for BRCA 1 and 2. Check out MYrisk testing offered by Myriad labs

Low risk: If you do not have  family history of early onset breast cancer, you have a low risk at your age. You appear to have been evaluated properly. Follow your doctor's advise about follow up care.
