: Yes it could be due to the transfusions. At the same time, ferritin goes up in the setting of acute infection or other inflammatory states, so without more information, it is difficult to know for sure. Please speak with your treating doctor about this.

my platelet count is 478 (ranges from 450 for the past year). doc told to take iron pills daily and ferritin is normal. was high platelets the cause of my 2 pregnancy losses? also been ttc now for 2 years?

: Thrombocytosis, or high platelets, is defined as persistently greater than 450,000 platelets/microliter. Iron pills will replenish the low iron and hemoglobin and hematocrit if someone has iron deficient anemia. If a repeat CBC has not improved the anemia and platelet count, a peripheral smear should be obtained and possibly see hematology. Additional labs are needed for recurrent pregnancy loss

Yes: You have iron deficiency anemia and should take oral iron and multivitamin supplements. Being that you are pregnant, for the sake of your and your baby's health, you should be under the care of an obstetrician.

Before lab orders: It sounds like you may have iron deficient anemia. Lab orders from random physicians unaware of your detailed medical history and unable to follow up on results will not serve you best. Talk to your GP or Gyn doc about your symptoms, they will be able to discuss options and pick tests that will make sense and also act on results as needed.

Not reported: Fatigue, dizziness, headache,weakness, ringing in the ears, irritability, leg pains and shortness of breath.  Anxiety has not been reported, though all those other things could make you anxious, See your PCP for a blood test or if you have had that and the ferritin is low iron supplementation is indicated talk to PCP.

Ferrous gluconate: It's easier on the gut than the sulfate. The key is to find out WHY you have low serum ferritin. Hookworm? Ulcer? Stomach cancer? A 'pop' vegetarian diet without supplements? Don't treat a lab value -- get to the cause.
