why is taking so long for incision on foot to heal?

Accepted Answer

Time to heal: Your surgeons cut went through many layers of tissue.  Each layer heals at a different rate.  While skin heals quickly,  the deep tough connective tissue (fascia)  takes a lot longer.  You should minimize strenuous activity for at least 12 weeks and progress slowly.   Remember, even when finally healed, that area will never have more than 80% of its strength return.

i recently had foot surgery 11/1/14
incision opened in one area doesn't seem to be healing too quickly ?

See your surgeon for: an examination. He might need to take a swab to ensure, what if any infection is responsible for the delayed healing. It might be a deep suture that got infected.
I recommend all my patients to report any healing problems to my office and my nurses to do all the dressing changes, to ensure proper healing.

post foot surgery 2 wks and part of my incision has shriveled up skin and is not united and some fluid comes out of that area. is this bad?

If the incision: is on the bottom of your foot, the apparent lack of union on each side of the incision is normal.  The skin of the foot is very thick and the top layer is dead.  It will not heal, but rather slough of gradually.  Regardless, I recommend a post surgical follow up visit.  Dr. Anne

i have a 2 inch incision w/stitches on bottom of foot. it's not supposed to get wet but would it be okay if i accidentally got it wet in the shower as long as i dry it promptly? stitches are now 9 days old?

Accepted Answer

: A one time exposure to clean water at day 9 should not cause problems. Watch f for redness, swelling and drainage from the wound. Schedule removal of the stitches with your PCP.

Accepted Answer

Is this normal?: Burning in the incision may be normal or may indicate something more serious. If your surgery was done by someone other than an md or do I would seek the care of an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon. One in your area can be found at aofas.Org.

i'm 3 weeks post op from foot surgery. is it okay to soak foot in water or take showers since incision seems to be closed up?

Accepted Answer

Post op care: If your stitches have been removed and there is no sign of infection, nor is the wound area slightly open, you can take a shower. However, ask your surgeon first. Also buy a shower cover to protect the area.

is it normal after foot surgery for dissolving inner stitches to get infected in incision spot?

Accepted Answer

No: It's not normal but sometimes the degradation of the suture material can be mistaken for an infection.  It may be something as simple as the soft tissue reacting to the breakdown of the suture.

7 weeks ago i had pereneous tendon surgery and my foot has severe swelling and incision has dark blue/black line.  is this normal?

Accepted Answer

If you were healing: well and you suddenly have marked swelling - I would advise your podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon.

numbness/pain incision but big problem i walk 100 feet perfectly fine than servere pain in sugerical hip if i continue numbness  down to calves ?

Accepted Answer

You may have spinal : Stenosis or peripheral vascular disease that may not have been apparent preop to your surgery as your distance may have been limited by your hip problem.  Now that the hip has been addressed, your walking distance has been increased bringing on symptoms of claudication or pain, numbess, tingling &/or fatigue in legs with walking.  This can be due to a narrowed spine canal or narrowed blood vessels.

3.5 weeks postop foot surgery and have excessive skin peeling that extends up to an inch away from incision. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no: Your use of the word "excessive" implies it is not normal, and so if your concerned about it I would let your surgeon know.  That being said, some degree of skin peeling is normal when skin is covered by a bandage or cast as the covering of the skin prevents the usual loss of the epidermis the usual and more gradual way.  The skin prep itself that was used during surgery can also contribute.
