Further eval: You may need more than x-ray studies...I would suggest that you see your family doc for possible referral to an orthopedic surgeon and possibly a neurologist....

Probably not: Is the hip pain consistent and associated with your menstual cycle? Can sometimes be hyperlaxity of the joint capsule and you may need PT. Have you seen a physician yet?

Need more info: In young people hip pain can be due to poor alignment between the top of the thigh bone and the hip socket, causing impingment. It can also be a tear in the labrum. More serious conditions involve poor blood supply to the head of the thigh bone, called avascular necrosis, and then there is arthritis, damage to the cartilage, bursitis and tendonitis.

Examination needed: Multiple causes are possible. You could be complaining of a painful snapping hip (psoas tendon or iliotibial band are common culprits). Internal joint damage is also possible: tears of the labrum or joint cartilage can cause intermittent painful catching. A thorough examination by your pcp or orthopaedic surgeon will likely lead to e answer for your hip.

Lots of things: It could be anything from arthritis to nothing.  Your doctor will be able to at least start you on the right path.

Arthritis: Hip necrosis , arthritis, trauma. See a orthopedist for x-rays and consult.

Unlikely: It is unlikely that the hip is slipping out of joint. A snapping hip could be causing your symptoms where muscle or tendon or other soft tissue is "slipping" over the edge of the bone.  This is best managed with stretching, pt, and sometimes a cortisone injection. At 51 you could also be experiencing symptoms of arthritis. See your doctor for an xray & evaluation.

i get sharp hip pain sometimes when i walk. i'm 17 and my hip can pop in and out of its joint. what could it be? is it serious? should i be worried?

Hip pain: There are several situations which may cause you to have these symptoms, such as snapping hip syndrome,  labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement,  loose bodies, hip dysphasia.  You should consult your musculoskeletal physician for evaluation and treatment.

Joint pain: Joint pain together with morning stiffness in a young female may be an indication of an underlying inflammatory disease.  If your symptoms have lasted more than 6 weeks; you have stiffness in the mornings for more than 30 minutes; and you have any pain or tenderness over the small joints of the hands or feet, I recommend being seen by a rheumatologist.  I'm happy to do a consult if needed.

how long do i have to wait to have arthroscopy of the hip after getting a cortisone shot in that joint? do i have to wait to get it out of body?

No : If the injection helped tell your surgeon( not sure if it was in the hip joint or hip bursa)... Either way if injection helped than arthroscopy may help( for bursectomy or hip labral tear). The steroid injection may have been a diagnostic and / or therapeutic injection but does not affect ( by itself) timing for surgery... Good luck!
