Emergency evaluation: Febrile neutropenia means low neutrophils which play an important in the bodies ability to fight infection. In an neutropenic state the body is susceptible to life threatening infections. If a fever is present during this period most commonly after chemotherapy then it requires an urgent medical evaluation and antibiotics which are usually given IV with growth factors to boost the neutrophil count.

Should be hospitalized: Febrile neutropenia is an emergency, hospitalization, isolation, broad spectrum antibiotics need to be given till recovery. Other treatments like G-CSF are given as per protocol for each institution, there may other problems causing delayed recovery from neutropenia, which would be assessed by treating team, good luck

i've been running 100-101 fever for 4 days. now it's 99.5. am i fever-free & safe to visit chemo patient in isolated ward w/neutropenia and pneumonia?

Better not: You had infection. The chemo patient are at high risk of getting infection. Although you are fever free, you may still harbor the bacteria or virus that can transmit to the patient. If you can avoid close contact. Try it, otherwise have good isolation.

follow up to "transient moderate neutropenia (0.6451.5 after 10 days)" post. my symptoms were heavy fatigue (multi-hr naps daily) and feeling sick-ish, no fever, anal fissure. neutrophils are now 1.0 after 21 days, barely out of range mchc (31.9)?

: Have you seen a hematologist? This is a needed opinion with a case like this, especially if your symptoms, which are non-specific, are being caused by the neutropenia. It would be necessary to know why you are neutropenic to find out what the treatment, if any, should be. So, see a hematologist to interpret your test results and fully evaluate you. why do doctors ask to take nystatin / chlorhexidine mouth wash is it scientifically proven to reduce neutropenic fever etc?

Cover infection: I think your doctors are trying to prevent you from getting infections, as they have concluded that your blood cell activity for immunity is compromised. The Nystatin is to cover fungal type infections and the chlorohexidine wash is to kill oral bacteria and therefore keep an active center of infection under control.

high h&h, high mcv, low mchc, low rdw, neutropenia, & lymphocytosis all values recurring for a few years. b12 therapy for macrocytosis ineffective. no drugs/alcohol. do smoke cigarettes. any ideas?

I suggest you have a bone marrow study. This could represent a "Pre-Leukemic" state...not to scare you JUST an "idea" as you requested.  BY NO MEANS AM I MAKING A DIAGNOSIS  This situation is UNUSUAL and this is just a thought!

Neutropenia: Neutropenia is a reduction in the neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that fights bacteria. It can be a very serious condition, leaving someone at risk of a bacterial infection. Enlarged spleen along with neutropenia implies there is a systemic problem with your blood system. A hematologist should be involved in your care, and you may need to have a bone marrow biopsy to investigate further.

Neutropenia is....: Defined numerically as an absolute neutrophil count (anc) less than 1500.  From there it is subdivided into mild (1000-1500), moderate (500-1000) and severe (&lt;500). Folks with severe neutropenia are at increased risk for bacterial infections. Mild to moderate, less so.  The reason for neutropenia needs to be determined. Treatments range from observation to stem cell transplant, depending on cause.

Related terms: Neutropenia refers to low numbers of a type of white blood cells called neutrophils. Pancytopenia refers to low numbers of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Pancytopenic patients are therefore usually neutropenic but the reverse is not always true.
