Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Yes: Everyone has cervical lymph nodes, which are normally the size and shape of small beans, less than 1 centimeter, smaller than a dime. If they are growing, if there are large numbers of them, or if they hurt, one can have a primary care doctor examine the nodes.

Small lump: Most posterior cervical nodes  that are palpable  represent metastasis to the posterior triangle of the neck, posterior to  sternomastoid muscle.  One can see a small nodular swelling if not palpate the structure.  It usually is in close proximity to the 11th cervical n. , the levator scapulae n.  which must be preserved if one suspects a disease  process where the node needs bx.

Enlarged nodes: There are many conditions which can cause lymph node enlargement.  Some of these conditions are benign and some are malignant.  Your physician will probably suggest an FNA (fine needle aspirate) where a tiny needle is used to extract cells so a pathologist can examine them.  Best of luck, see your doctor.

Fighting infection: The most common reason to have recently enlarged lymph nodes is infection. It may be that you are fighting off infections that you are not even aware of. There are some other concerning things that can cause nodes to enlarge. These typically stay enlarged for several months, not just a few weeks. If you start having new symptoms or the nodes persist for months you should have them looked at.

Lymphoma unlikely: You may feel the node every couple of weeks, if the lymph gland doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, or lose weight, you should see a doctor.

Almost never: Almost all young adults have at least two. If they're not fixed to the surrounding structures, grotesquely big, or rocky / rubbery, leave them alone and forget about them.
