Diabetes: If the test you had was a hemoglobin a1c test then any result greater than 6.5 is an indication of diabetes.  Previously there was specific glucose challenge tests for diabetes but recently the hemoglobina1c has become widely accepted as it factors in the last 3 months of average blood glucose levels.  You should consult your specific physician regarding your test result and treatment.

Accepted Answer

You shouldn't: While the tea by itself is considered a "liquid" only, you may mix it with sweetner or cream. Further, there can be stimulating effects, which may have a change in your glucose or Insulin release. Just better to have water only.

Yes: You can, as long as it has no calories in it.

I would avoid: this - especially the splenda.  Some studies suggest that ingestion of some artificial sweeteners can cause release of insulin.

Yes: You can have decaf tea or coffee before fasting blood test.  Hold the milk and sweetener though.

Try Not: Fasting for thyroid tests not usually needed so perhaps you are also having lipids, cortisol or blood glucose as well. Best if only water for the 12 hours prior to fasting tests. Some evidence that perhaps caffeine can impact blood sugar very slightly (though may be insignificant). Some sources of coffee (eg via percolator) have oils that raise triglyceride levels. Wait for that cup if you can.

my father had random glucose level of 135 two days back, today it was 189 after 1 hour of taking tea with 1 spoon of sugar along with some sugar free biscuits. he is non diabetic as a month ago his fasting was 99. should i worry?

Worth a study: I would have him arrange to see his doc &amp; do a A1C study, which reflects blood sugar variation over a 3 month period. He may be a type 2 diabetic that  glucose levels done at random did not clearly reveal earlier.

is it okay if i dont drink a water prior to fasting hormones bloodwork? would that affect the test results? i only took few sips of water 3-4 mins before a blood draw. i didnt feel dehydrated.had big cup of tea night before, 9 hours prior?

Accepted Answer

: I you are concerned about diluting your blood sample by drinking water, rest assured that it would take 2-3 liters of water to do this. One cup or glass of water would not affect the fasting hormones bloodwork.
