Anxiety, arrhythmia: The best way to tell is to wear what's called a holter monitor - basically an ekg that's always attached to you so it monitors your heart all the time -- that way a physician can see exactly what you're heart is doing when these episodes happen -- it could just be a panic attack, it could be normal fast heart rhythm (sinus tachycardia) or possibly a more concerning heart rhythm.

Heart rate: Is this a question or a statement.  Are you taking your pulse while you are falling asleep?  If so, are you worried there is something wrong with your heart? Anxiety can increase your heart rate. What is your average heart rate while awake at rest?  Have someone take your heart rate while you are asleep. I am not sure what to say about the falling asleep heart rate.  Talk to you primary about this

See below: It may be symptoms of sleep apnea. Do you gasp or choke for breath periodically at night, have daytime sleepiness, dry mouth, or night time acid reflux? Then those may be symptoms of sleep apnea. A visit to a sleep physician may help in discerning if that is the case. Hope that helps!

Question?: Not sure what your question is.  If you're prone to bouts of rapid heart beat, a 24 hour recording (or 30 day, if needed) can help your doctor determine what type of rhythm disturbance you have which is essential to choosing the right course of treatment.

Nocturnal tachycardi: This could be psychiatric (eg anxiety), endocrine (eg hyperactive thyroid), cardiac (eg arrhythmia, structural heart disease). Since its been going on for a couple of weeks its a good idea to see your doctor. Good luck and sweat dreams. Avoid or minimize caffeinated beverages.

Normal: Many children have sinus arrhythmia...Which is fancy for irregular heart beat. It is normal. As long as there are no changes in color...It is just skips a beat here and there...It is fine. If you are worried see your pediatrician. We see it all the time...No worries.( and if there any worries, then you will see a cardiologist.).

Wear a monitor: You may be having supraventricular tachycardia or a mild variant that's a non-problem. It would be great if you could wear a holter monitor and clarify exactly what's happening. Your physician is very familiar with this. Best wishes.

i just gave my almost 4 year old a dose of delsym (dextromethorphan) for the first time and she is asleep but seems restless and her heartbeat is elevated. is it bad?

If you can keep: her stable (no seizure activity, no somnolence, no high uncontrolled fever, no apnea, no confusion agitation) overnight by checking on her very 1-2 hours, and she appears to be breathing well, then I would let the heart rate be a little fast.  It's most likely the antihistamine in the Delsym (dextromethorphan) that is causing the fast heart rate, and in a 4 year old they can do 130-140 heart beat for a long time.

More info....: The heart rate of 173 BPM is fast and meets the definition of tachycardia. The next question is what was the rhythm when your your rate was 173? So, to make this diagnosis and then decide on treatment based on this diagnosis, you need to see a cardiologist. The cardiologist can look at your monitor results and decide on what to do from here. Headaches: Headaches including Migraine equivalents are often hard to diagnose the cause, especially over the computer.  There are multiple factors that can be involved, so best advice for you is to see your doctor and get the full History and physical done, so the best and most accurate cause can be found, to assure the best treatment.
