i have a faint systolic murmur. had echo and came out norm.  my cardiologist said its innocent. no symp. i read that asd's can be missed. do i worry?

Not really: Usually patients with ASD have an abnormal ekg, they have some symptoms like easy fatiguebalilty, and shortness of breath with exertion. The right side of the heart is also enlarged on echo. In the absence of above and given the fact that your echo is normal it is unlikely that you have an asd.

Yes: Flow murmurs are not uncommon.The murmurs reflect an increase flow over valve can be found in anemia, pregnancy and metabolic conditions and will usually a normal echo.

Echo: What you describe can be within the range of normal for an echo. Pulmonary hypertension is not normal but the measurement of PAP via echo, while very useful is not as accurate as catheter measured pressure. Discuss your situation with your Doc and ask for an explanation of your situation and why he did not seem concerned.

Unlikey: I'm glad you've read up on this. Sinus venosus asd's are rare to begin with and i'd be surprised if ultrasound missed it. Any suspicion does require a consult -- what were you told?

Echocardiography, : Echocardiography, an ultrasound of your heart, is the gold standard for evaluating murmurs. A murmur is nothing more than turbulent blood flow through the heart and can be caused by a variety of things, ranging from abnormal heart valves to holes in the heart, to abnormalities with the heart muscle itself. An echocardiogram ("echo") can evaluate all of these items at once, and does so without radiation, is non-invasive, and as medical tests go these days, is relatively cheap. If you are feeling lightheaded or dizzy then it is particularly important that you be evaluated soon. I hope this helps!

Get an Echo!: A 5 year child with a 2/6 systolic murmur could mean absolutely nothing, or could indicate a structural pathology within the heart.  Many children have innocent or "flow" murmurs.  So, a murmur is heard on auscultation, but there is no associated pathology.  On the other hand,  in a small subset of patients, a systolic murmur could signify a heart defect. An echo will differentiate between these 2.
