Share your pain: Faking anything is not likely to win you authentic friends, relationships, or self esteem. But it is a very good question. The dishonesty of trying for perfection and the isolation that comes with some depressive illnesses may be leading to feeling so alone in the world. Seek group therapy. Seek volunteer opportunities where you help others. Go be vulnerable and real and honestly ask for help.

For the better: There's a stigma in having made an attempt, and rightly so -- but when people see you are working hard to get your life back together, learning useful skills, avoiding getting trapped in problem relationships, and trying to be the best person you can be, you'll discover you suddenly have troops of friends. I encourage you to be as expressive as possible!  stay safe!

It's the drunk driver, the drug abuser, the promiscuous casual-sex addict whose reckless behavior may be "chronic suicide.".

Depends: Although the majority of self-cutting is not intended to be fatal, I have had patients to deliberately try to open an artery with the intent of dying.  One concern with wrist-cutting is that teens may not be aware how many tendons are just under the skin that can be severed if they cut cross-wise.  Usually, though, wrist cutting is quite superficial and, as dr. Brown indicated, a cry for help.

Takes a professional: An attempt means that someone tried to actually kill themself. A gesture is posturing about the action.  We are very concerned if someone has a plan for suicide, has left a note, and is expected to try.  Gestures are more commonly associated with manipulation of people to gain credence or attention.

Often impossible: Someone taking a sedating drug may unthinkingly take too many pills. We need to look at the life circumstances and what else the person was saying and doing to determine whether there was intent to harm oneself.
