Sorry, none.: Eye transplants are not yet feasible, even with potent antirejection drugs. The optic nerve connections are not capable of transmitting visual impulses even if the actual procedural steps were performed. Corneal transplants are commonly done as needed for corneal scarring or diseases, and cataract removal and new lens placement is routine, but no eye transplants!

Not quite yet...: We're getting better but if the brain's visual centers are damaged or the optic nerve is destroyed there currently is no method for repair.  If the injury is limited to the retina only - the possibility of a retinal implant theoretically exists.  We've still got a long wait for this capability.

No: This is not available at present &amp; unlikely to be available in the foreseeable future.

Accepted Answer

Not yet..: No, currently the cornea, or the inner layer of the cornea, is the only part of the eye that is being transplanted on any regular basis.  Studies are being conducted on other tissues of the eye, particularly the layer underneath the macula and retina, called the retinal pigment epithelium.  When someone donates an entire eye, cornea it is sometimes used for teaching or research purposes.

Not: To my knowledge.  But yes a corneal transplant.

Accepted Answer

More than cornea: Birds have the largest eyes relative to their size in the animal kingdom. Eagles have two maculas per eye. One set works for depth perception & the other set points off to the side. The result is extremely sharp vision across a panoramic view, not just centrally like us. Their ciliary muscles can change the shape of the lens rapidly and to a greater extent than mammals'.

No: We cannot transplant the entire eye currently.  We are able to transplant a cornea from a donor eye to a recipient with a diseased or cloudy cornea.

i want my eye to heal completely and to see sight improvement, but how long is it after the transplant until someone can go back to work?

Accepted Answer

Is other eye OK?: I am guessing you are talking about corneal transplantation in one of your eyes.  If your work is strenuous, and the other eye sees well, your transplant surgeon may want you to go easy so that the transplant is not endangered which could be six months or so.  If you are doing office of light duty work, you might  be able to return to work within weeks.

No: We can transplant corneas and maybe in the near future, part of the retina, but whole eye transplants cannot be done now or anytime in the foreseeable future.

Accepted Answer

Eye transplants: Only the cornea and lens can be removed and replaced.  The rest of the eye can not be transplanted.
