Steroid cream: Use hot moist packs and you can rub 1% over the counter hydro-cortisone cream 2 times daily on the bit area until swelling is gone.  Do not use the steroid cream in the eye nor more than 2 weeks.  See your family doctor if it gets worse.

Insect bites: Insect bites in certain areas are more likely to swell up- around the eyelids, on the fingers, on the penis, on the ears. But if it looks like the redness is spreading, he should be checked to make sure it isn't getting infected.

Reasonable: For the acute allergy based reaction of a bug bite on eyelids, a pulse corticosteroid treatment is very reasonable to reduce eyelid swelling, itchiness, and discomfort. A brief treatment is not likely to impose any unfavorable health consequences.

my 13 month old has a swollen eye from a bug bite. i gave him zyrtec about ten hours ago. the swelling hasnt gone down, can i give him benedrly too?

Yes: I would recommend seeing your PCP. The area around the eye may be prone to infection. If the insect bite is not infected, the local reaction may be controlled by a cool compress, and local application of Caladryl  lotion.  You may also use Aoral antihistamine such as Benadryl. The dose may be discussed with the pharmacy and your PCP.

Depends: On type of bug, if vision is affected, if not resolving on it's own, if it's warm, tender, puffy with fluid, ulcerated areas then should be examined since may need treatment with antibiotics, steroids etc.
A minor mosquito-like small bite can resolve on its own, use lotions, etc.

Heat, age, hygiene: It is most likely dried tears and discharge from blepharitis-gets worse when its hotter, poor lid hygiene and aging. Regular lid hygiene with occaisional topical antibiotics controls it.  Warm compress with lid scrubs. Bad cases or rosacea (see your doctor for this diagnosis) are often given systemic antibiotics (pills you take by mouth) in addition to topical.  Its never cured-its controlled!

Exam: Go to a quick care clinic to have the insect bite checked. Not uncommonly i see secondary infections from insect bites that requires treatment with antibiotics. Often there is an allergic component too. So depending on the appearance of the wound and swelling, appropriate treatment can be rendered. Trial cold compresses for now ; see quick care doctor today.

It happens: The soft tissue surrounding the eye will often puff up for a couple days after such a bite. The response is a protective one where the capillaries leak serum to dilute any toxin &amp; prevent it from invading the blood. I would just watch the area for any redness or drainage that would suggest an infection. A 15 mo won't let you apply a cool compress, but diphenhydramine might help if it itches.
