It varies a lot: Patient can stay lucid almost till the end. It is only d last few days that patients may become lethargic, confused, disoriented and then lose consciousness. The final step is stoppage of breathing or the heart. Some patients develop serious infections and may have high fever. It all depends on where the bulk of the tumor is located...Symptoms would often relate to that site or area of bulky tumor.

REM: Dreaming takes place during rem sleep. You have 5 sleep stages that you progress through. The duration of the rem stage increases as you reach the early morning so that's your best bet of having more lucid dreams. self-talk : Lucid dreaming is usually desired because it gives the dreamer control and awareness. But to answer your  question, some people can influence their dreams with self-talk or self-hypnosis before they fall asleep. So if one did not want to spoil happy dreams with lucidity, one could theoretically say to oneself that they will enjoy their dreams without any rational input.
