?Safe for child ?: Legally, states grants citizenship at birth & allows parents to make decisions for the child based on the assumption that they will always do so in the child's best interest.By definition the drug taking mother has shown she did not make such decisions while pregnant.States routinely take custody of drug exposed infants until it is determined the parent will become responsible in the future.

No: Any knowingly pregnant women taking drugs is guilty of child abuse.Baby should be tested, may well require appropriate observation and possible treatment.Necessary authorities must be informed and  mother prevented from taking baby out of hospital until circumstances have been evaluated.Most babies should be placed in temporary foster care until their safety is assured. Maybe kid should be adopted.

What meds?: Some meds are safe when breastfeeding, some are not.  Meds in breast milk may interact with meds your baby takes, too.  Does the doctor who prescribed them know that you are breastfeeding?  Does the doctor who prescribed your child meds, know that you are breastfeeding and taking meds, too?  If not, call the doc who gave meds to baby and see. Or ask again and specify meds for both of you.

i have a new born that is a week old.he was poo-ing non stop everyday for the 1st few days then he stopped and has not poo-ed for 2 days now.it looks like he is trying to push not sure...is there some medication i can use for the baby?

Baby Stool: Constipation in babies is actually not common. True constipation is seen as hard pellet like stool. If your baby is pooping less, this may be normal. Because the baby m ay be utilizing all that they are fed, they may not stool for up to 3-5 days. The baby should be producing urine diapers 4-5 times a day. Don't give any water or juice or any other fluids other than breastmilk or formula.

Nasal wash: At 3 weeks the primary cause of congestion is the environment. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that may not bother you but irritate a babies nose. A good nasal clean out with saline can remove much of this irritant load, but removing the offending irritants from babies life helps more in the long run.Air particle filters can also help.

Last trimester:: Meconium is preferred over urine for testing of neonates. Urine testing indicates drug use only over the last 1–10 days, depending on the drug. Meconium documents drug use over an extended period of time, covering at least the last trimester of pregnancy.

what is the process of drug testing a new born? do they drug test randomly or on all babies?

Varies: My delivering hospitals have lists from Child and Family Services that point out individuals with open drug investigations. When they deliver, urine from mom and baby will usually be screened and in many cases the first baby stool will also be submitted for study. I do not routinely order drug studies on babies, but any prior history of maternal drug use may require screening for medical purposes.

Depends on situation: Normal newborns are not usually screened for drugs.If the child and family services have a case open, urine and meconium are collected.Urine is screened for common drugs, while the meconium  is sent for special studies that can pick up almost anything used over the preceding few months.
