You don't need phiso: If the nerve is just pinched, then it mayheal by itself.The therapy may help it heal sooner and reduce the inflamation

Cortisone Injection: It is possible that you have a spasm of your piriformis muscle which sits upon your sciatic nerve. If this is the case, a shot of cortisone in that muscle will provide immediate relief. You might have something else, so following up with your primary care provider is important.

what is the best relief for sciatic nerve pain?

Several : Low back, buttock and "shooting" leg pain are all symptoms of a pinched nerve.  It sounds like you may have that problem.  If the pain is severe and limiting your activity still, the best non-narcotic medications that I have found to work for my patients are antiinflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen which are over-the-counter medications.  Other non-narcotic medications include tramadol (ultram) which requires a prescription and nerve-pain medications such as gabapentin.  These are all to be taken for temporary pain relief.  This type of pain typically resolves with time.  Ask your primary physician about these if the pain is still limiting you.  If it is still going on for more than a month an MRI may be helpful to help sort out what is going on and there could be other potential treatments outside of surgery that could benefit you.

6 months prego... how do i know if my back pain is from my sciatic nerve? & if it is that, how can i get relief w/o taking pain killers?

Tylenol (acetaminophen): Being pregnant makes this difficult.  Sciatica refers to pain that travels down the leg.  It is not emergent but it is painful.  I would recommend physical therapy and a support belt for your tummy.  Tylenol (acetaminophen) is your safest option.

is steroid nerve block contradicted if sciatic nerve pain is caused by tumor compression? how long does the pain relief usually last?

Accepted Answer

No it is not: There is no contraindication to steroid injection. But it is not very likely to help, if the tumor is causing compression of the nerve. It is better to try relieving the pressure by means of radiation therapy or some other means of causing shrinkage of tumor. Hyperthermia can be added to radiation  as together they may work even better. You should seek 2nd opinion for further treatment of this tum.

what is a good exercise for someone with sciatic nerve problems?

Stretching perhaps: We feel that inactivity can make sciatica worse, and do know that many discs can dry out (dessicate) over 9-10 months.  Traditional exercise programs use williams exercises, but the newer mckenzie program is more effective.  Gentle, supervised pilates, and feldenkreis may benefit.  Proper gradual stretching is very useful.  Learn these approaches from an expert physical therapist.

Acupuncture?: Acupuncture can be beneficial and cost effective treatment for back pain as can other modalities such as manipulations, massage, physical therapy, yoga, or tai chi.

See md: I would see your pcp for referral to a physical therapist.A good pt can instruct u on a home program for lower back exersises( williams flexion for instance) which may help your lbp and can improve sciatica pain as well . If not; see your spine surgeon... Good luck!

sciatic nerve damage due to injection 3 months ago. still numb to the touch with burning sensation. will it ever recover? can i exercise/jog?

Injection may have : hit the sciatic nerve. . Continue to work out; however, very important to communicate this issue to treating physician. Exercise is not an issue. You must be re-checked.

i am pregnant 2m and i had sciatic nerve pain but feel better now and light pain. can i drive a car and start exercise like walking or stretching?

Accepted Answer

Yes: You should discuss with your OB too.  You should be fine to walk, stretch, lift light weights, yoga, etc as long as the exercises feel ok.  Seeing a physical therapist can help to give you guidelines on good exercises as well.
