Reactive airways: The cigarette smoke likely irritated your airways and caused them to constrict. The constriction is likely why you had difficulty breathing. You may be exposed to other environmental factors that also bother your lungs and can consider seeing an allergist for both pulmonary function tests and/or allergy tests. Probably not a good idea to smoke in the future. Good luck.

This : This sharp pain on the left side of chest could be from your lungs, heart or mediastinum.  It is possible that it is lung cancer or pulmonary embolism.  I would reccommend that you get lab work of d dimer, and chest xray to start.  If there is either abnormal, then a ct scan of chest with contrast.  If the chest pain were dull, i would reccommend a stress test and echo cardiogram.  Sharp pains may more likley be from lung or pleura.

Stabbing pain: At your age this is quite common. Assuming that you are totally healthy and have no cardiac issues this is probably muscular in nature.

Rule out asthma/VCD: A virtual consult may be useful to you and your physician. Bronchoconstriction and vocal cord dysfunction should be evaluated. Pulmonary function testing may be ordered.

In same part: It all depends. Number of pack years, age, present damage, pulmonary function testing, additional diseases and so on.

The lungs certainly do not worsen off smoking. Often there is nice improvement within the first two months.

To some extent yes: but not everyone does significant or permanent damage to their lungs.  There are genetic differences in the production of certain enzymes that protect the lungs from proteolytic proteins that are increased by smoking and air pollution, where some people get lots of damage with exposure, and other people get much less, or even sometimes none. Most people get some damage somewhere- heart, cancer etc

COPD, cough, cancer: The smoke and hundreds of other constituents that make up cigarettes damage your airways, the lining of your airways, and can destroy the tiny air sacs (alveoli) that help you get oxygen in your body and co2 out. This leads to chronic bronchitis and emphysema (these two diseases are lumped under the category of copd).  Finally, smoking greatly increases your risk of lung cancer.

Stop smoking for one: There is no evidence that anything other than time and continuing to be smoke-free is necessary for lungs to heal.  Am sure that a healthy diet and exercise will help you feel better sooner.  It is quite common for a productive cough to begin after people stop smoking, since the lungs are getting rid of all the junk that has been put in them by smoking. This resolves in several weeks to months.
