Everyone is: different but setting target date to stop and then stopping completely on that day can be effective.  Learning some self-hypnosis can support this plan of action.  Chewing gum or eating mints is useful, especially at high risk times like coffee breaks. Not smoking can make things better but you need to see doctor. Better off w/out e-cigs.  Peace &amp; health.

Lung Cancer Scare: At age 32, even with a significant smoking history, it is unlikely that you have lung cancer, especially with a negative chest x-ray. The shortness of breath ("dyspnea") needs to be evaluated by a pulmonologist, however. You could have something as common as asthma to account for the dyspnea, but it needs to be evaluated soon.

Hello. : Hello. I am not sure why you are short of breath. If you have been smoking for a long time and the quit or significantly cut down on use, that can lead to coughing up mucus and that can cause some shortness of breath.  What is usually happening is that toxins in cigarettes paralyzed the motile hairs (cilia) in the respiratory system. Those cilia move bacteria, viruses, dead cells and debris out of your system. If the amount of toxins is reduced, the cilia may be motile again. This would provide a tempoary increase in pulmonary symptoms. If this is the case, stay very well hydrated, to help keep the mucus moist.

The stethoscope is an insensitive instrument but your doctor no doubt made his/her assessment based on your symptoms, risk factors, demographics, and the incidence of disease under consideration. You self-report a "generalized anxiety disorder" which is a common cause of your symptoms.
