: Unfortunately, there is really no way to know if the melanoma stage will change-that is why it is removed surgically to test the margins, size and depth. I know it is really difficult waiting for results but hopefully your doctor will see you very soon and let you know what the treatment plan is going to be, if you need more treatment besides removal. Cured: In situ melanoma is extremely localized.  If resected with a least 1 cm. margin of normal skin, this is then a cured lesion.  The potential for a new and distinct lesion to appear is always a possibility.  No chance that the in-situ lesion could have spread.

Melanoma: (NM) is the most aggressive form of melanoma. It tends to grow more rapidly in thickness than in diameter. Instead of arising from a pre-existing mole, it may appear in a spot where a lesion did not previously exist . You are in trouble: The presence of any benign nevi cells left to the chance  for growth usually over a prolonged period of time will continue to transform and occasionally metastasize without regrowth  of the primary lesion.  If you leave it alone, it will  grow on you.

: Shave biopsy is not an appropriate diagnostic maneuver for diagnosing melanoma. You and your doctor should consult the pathologist about the findings.

Needs monitoring: You are right, it may be a reaction to recent surgery or(less likely) there can be melanoma spread into your lymph node. Only time will tell you which possibility it is. If the nodes are enlarged due to reaction to surgery(or infection), then they will settle down and decrease in size in 4-6 weeks. So keep an eye and check the size of the node once weekly and see if they decrease or increase .

i was diagnosed with melanoma in situ (0.4 x 0.4 x 0.1cm) on my right shin and am having surgery in two weeks.  i will be getting skin checks every three months. what are the chances this could spread to my lymph nodes later on?

Very low risk: In Stage 0 melanoma, the malignant tumor is still confined to the upper layer of the skin—the epidermis—which means the cancer cells are only in the outer layer of the skin and have not grown into the second layer of skin, called the dermis. Stage 0 melanoma is not considered invasive melanoma, therefore there is very very low risk of it spreading to lymph nodes.
