i put on whitfield ointment on my lips and developed tiny bumps that won't go away.  i've had it for over a year  now and it's still there.  ?

Cysts or comedones: I doubt if it had anything to do with the whitfield's ointment. You either have comedones (plugged oil glands) or milia (tiny epidermal cysts), either of which a dermatologist can easily treat for you.

In general more information is needed to know the cause behind it - skin problems, hormonal issues, scars, smoking, dehydration, drugs, chemical etc. Good lip hygiene can be practiced by exfoliating it when brushing teeth, use a lip balm with SPF in it, stay hydrated. Dermatologists can offer some creams, laser treatments or peels that can help with it.

i use neosporin ointment instead of lipbalm when my lips are really chapped and it works. is this ok to do?

Neomycin: Neosporin contains bacitracin, polymyxin and neomycin.  Neomycin is a common allergan so many people react with a contact allergy dermatitis to neosporin.  I would recommend using aquaphor lip ointment instead as it almost never causes a problem.

Lip allergy &amp; eczema: Persistent chapped lips is lip eczema, which can be treated like skin eczema, using hydrocortisone cream plus Vaseline or Aquaphor to retain moisture. Sometimes lipsticks or lip sunscreen chemicals are causing an allergic reaction on the lips. Other times, a person is a primary lip-licker (it's his habit). Once cracked, lips get irritated by routine foods and juices. Hydrocortisone for 1 wk helps.

Mostly time: It is not unusual to see discoloration of the lips in smokers due to decreased oxygen in the those tiny lip blood vessels. The best thing: what you've already done ..quitting smoking!  Hopefully a more normal color will return with better oxygenation. Generous water intake, sun block to lips, &amp; maybe lime/lemon may bleach a bit. You also might try putting whitening toothpaste on your lips.
