Swollen tonsils: Swollen tonsils are typically from infection or an active immune system.  Allergies can cause swelling in the mouth and throat, but the tonsils are often spared.  Allergy pills would only be effective if the swelling were specifically from allergies, like angioedema.  Steroids would be more effective in this circumstance.  If the tonsils are swollen from infection, we would treat with antibiotics.

Other Sx ???: Tonsils in kids tend to grow faster than they do until age 7-8 when they stop, then the kid continues to grow & the tonsils assume a smaller relative size. Unless the kid has a sleep disturbance or chronically infected tonsils, they are generally left alone & will be less of an issue in the teen years. If they are just big, ignore it, if inflamed & febrile, she needs to be seen.

Sore throat: Streptococcal pharyngitis responds very well to appropriate anibiotics. After antibiotics fever/ sore throat gets better but swollen tonsils which is from inflammation can takes few weeks to go back to normal.  If your sore throat is not better it may be due to concurrent viral illness or a secondary complication from strep throat.
