Yes.: Esophageal varices are abnormally dilated veins within the wall of the esophagus that often arise in response to blockage of blood flow thru the liver (portal hypertension).  These are prone to rupture, causing hematemesis (vomiting blood).  This is a medical emergency, often requiring direct control of the bleeding +/- decompression of the liver.

Banding: Esophageal varices are treated with endoscopic banding, a procedure (semi invasive) that ties the varices in the esophagus that prevents them from bleeding. Sclerotherapy (injecting a substance that will cause obliteration of a varix) is another option, but is less frequently used. Anti-acid therapy with acid reducers is added as well.

Following a low salt diet will help reduce any weight gain from fluid retention.  Discuss with your doctor about diuretics which can also control your body's fluid balance.

This is the same process that causes Esophageal Varices . The only difference is the stomach [ Gastric] part of the GI tract is farther down the line.
