Esophageal varices: Esophageal varices themselves do not cause weight gain. Often times, it is a sign of liver dysfunction (portal hypertension). Following a low salt diet will help reduce any weight gain from fluid retention. Discuss with your doctor about diuretics which can also control your body's fluid balance.
