The price!: With very rare exceptions, the vast majority of generic drugs are every bit as good as the brand name. However, the brand name usually costs a whole lot more! the active medicine should be identical but there may be differences in the fillers and binders (most drugs have many ingredients besides the active medicine). Some people may tolerate one more than another due to these minor differences.

Discuss with your treating Psychiatrist about your concern of effectiveness of Escitalopram for Depression, his experience of the particular manufacturer’s generic Escitalopram and your wish of taking Lexapro (escitalopram) or another medication

Usually not: Most people do not notice any major difference between brand and generic medications, as the active ingredient is supposed to be the same.  However, in my experience, I occasionally have a rare patient who perceives variable efficacy between the brand and generic or between different generics. In those cases, he/she requests that I write for the either the specific generic preferred or brand name.

I don't think so.: I have found a difference between the brand and the generic for many medications, but not this one.

Different levels: Generics can result in a different blood level for many reasons. It is fine to stay on the generics with the dosage adjusted as needed, or go back and pay far more for the brand name. The first option is usually adequate. I don't expect that this is very common. I have 800 patients, with probably 50 or 75 on Lexapro (escitalopram) and I have only once had to make a dosage adjustment for a generic.

This happens: The FDA does not require the same standards from generics that it does with trade names.  In addition, there can be different fillers and binders so the formulation is not exactly the same.  If you were obtaining relief from a particular generic, ask for that manufacturer.   Ask your former pharmacy which brand they dispensed to you.

I would not: Common side effects could be anxiety, depression and reslessness.

Depression meds: This is the generic for lexapro (escitalopram).  Min is 5.  Max is 20.
