No: In my 35 years of practice, I have never seen a case of reactive hypoglycemia.  The disorder doesn't exist, if you're overweight the symptoms are a natural response to your glucose level returning to normal. It is not hypoglycemia, which doesn't occur unless you're receiving treatment for diabetes or have had GI surgery, cancer, severe liver or kidney disease.

Depends: A single episode of hypoglycemia, related to an Insulin overdose in a type 1 diabetic can be treated and resolved in 5 to 10 minutes, (turn off your pump for 5 minutes, intake 5 gm oral glucose). However, multiple episodes, unknown cause of episodes can be much more difficult and involved to treat. Please check in with your doc, as hypoglycemia can be serious health risk. Be well.

i have repeated episodes of hypoglycemia. with good diet how long till they disappear ? can the episodes disappear completely?

Accepted Answer

Depends: If you have hypoglycemia while fasting, that is very concerning for an insulinoma.  If you have hypoglycemia after eating and have been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia, the treatment is small frequent meals with minimal carbohydrates. Insulinomas require surgery for cure. Reactive hypoglycemia should resolve with the prescribed diet, but typically returns if you deviate from the diet.

: Hypoglycemia occurs when the supply of available glucose has been transported out of the bloodstream into cells. It generally means a miss-match between the treatment and the diet, where more insulin effect is present than needed for that diet. The side long term side effects of diabetes (progression) depends on the level of glucose control. Good=slows it/bad speeds it. Discuss this with your team

Confused: Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar.  You would not want to decrease sugar if hypoglycemic.  One complication of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is dehydration,  but drinking water does not fix the primary problem.   See your doctor or a certified diabetes educator.

i have had 2 symptomatic episodes of hypoglycemia in the past month. i am 2 yrs post op, bypass. how can i increase my sugar intake w/o complication?

Multiple factors: I'm assuming you are not diabetic- if you are please see your doc for med adjustment. You should also document a low blood sugar using glucometer. I usually recommend light snacks inbetween meals to avoid hypoglycemia.

experiencing recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia postpartum. i did have cholestasis of pregnancy in this pregnancy and another in 2019. could the two be related?

: I don't see a connection between your hypoglycemia and your history of cholestasis during pregnancy in 2009. I recommend consulting an endocrinologist for evaluation of the type of hypoglycemia you're experiencing and for appropriate testing and treatment.

Biochemical proof: Hi. Before any imaging of the pancreas is done, biochemical proof of fasting insulin-mediated pathological hypoglycemia should be established. Has that been done? If so, EUS is good, but still not as good as intraoperative US. If endogenous insulin-mediated pathological hypoglycemia is proven, the problem lies in the pancreas, and surgery is warranted. We need more info. Most insulinomas not CA.

Coffee, phentermine: The symptoms of hypoglycemia are tied to an adrenaline surge, leading to a jittery, shaky, light-headed state.  If you are drinking coffee or taking meds which cause a jittery feeling, then the symptoms would be even worse.

Accepted Answer

: Absolutely, many medical conditions may be at the root from infections to malignancies, to name a few, should be investigated properly.
