i have had epilepsy and hydrocephalus for 52 years. i'm sixty now. what is the life span for this. i've had 6 surgeries, not including the first at 8. what is the life span for a person with this. i was told each operation shortens my life by one yr?

: The older you are the harder the surgery so tough fights ahead if you want to survive 10 years from now. God bless you!

TV?: Unlikely - no studies have shown an association with television viewing.

Accepted Answer

Possibility: Persons with autism spectrum have a 30 to 35 percent risk of developing epilepsy.  Experience is that most cases develop by adolescence.  Generally if you have passed adolescence and child bearing, you have passed the risk period.  Be cautious anyway and practice good health habits.

Yes: Seizure disorders can occur anytime depending on other medical conditions, medications, and trauma/surgery history.

what life style changes do i need to make if i was diagnosed with epilepsy?

Accepted Answer

Some restrictions: In most states, driving is restricted until it is clear that seizures are fully controlled.  If still experiencing events, do not drive, operate power equipment, do activities at heights, or swim or take bath alone.  However, if you find an effective medicine with tolerable side effects, make certain you never miss, and get help if you are sick and cannot swallow your pills.

Yes: If conditions are just right patients can have seizures at any age . Secondary causes need to be evaluated ofcourse but seizures are unpredictable.

when there is no apparent cause for a person's epilepsy, have the person in fact had epilepsy (without seizures..) their whole life but the seizures just chose to show up later? and why do they appear out of nowhere?

: There is always an electrochemical trigger for epileptic events, but often difficult to uncover unless specialized studies are conducted.  A neurologist can assess your episodes and likely provide successful anti-epileptic interventions.

hello, i was diagnosed with epilepsy and haven't had a seizure in my life. how is that possible?

Opinion: Epilepsy involves repetitive episodes of altered consciousness, and a variety of epilepsy, complex partial seizures is associated with frequent amnesia for the spells. Perhaps this is what your doctor feels is present.  An EEG could be abnormally paroxysmal and lead to diagnosis, but abnormal brain waves are not necessarily due to seizures.  Think a second opinion is in order.

does having tics as a young child mean that a child will have a higher likelihood of epilepsy later in life?

Accepted Answer

No: There is no association between motor movement disorders (tics) and having seizures.  The two could exist in the same patient but that would be a comorbidity, not an increase risk situation.

i had a seizure for the first time in my life. i have no prior history in my family of seizures or epilepsy. i had a monster two hours before going to bed?

Accepted Answer

: Was it a witnessed seizure, focal or generalized seizure? It is abnormal if a seizure activity can be induced by drinking a can of monster. You should see a neurologist as soon as possible.
