Unfortunately no: The urine dipstick can show only evidence of blood--white or red blood cells, ketone, sugar, protein, urobilinogen, how concentrated urine is, and may hint at positive for bacteria, but cannot show what specific type of bacteria. Even the clinical urinalysis cannot do that--it is often requiring culture and sensitivity testing to id the specific bug. Consult doc. Good luck.

Healthcare acquired : Other than an ascending UTI from feces, instrumentation with less that optimally sterilized equipment or poor aseptic techniques of catheter insertion could also introduce this microbe into the urinary tract

i live in toronto. doctors can't treat my uti since 2009. found enterococcus, used amoxicillin over and over. who can help me in ny state or close?

Find a urologist: You need a urine culture with sensitivities so that the right antibiotic is given to you.  However, if the urine cultures are negative then you may have a non-infectious bladder condition that feels like a uti, but is not.  A common cause of this is interstitial cystitis and this needs diet modification and other treatments that are not antibiotics. Best of luck.

i've had recurrent uti's since end of nov. first treated with selexid, then furadantin twice. now they've cultured my urine and found enterococcus faecalis. how can i have got this? from sex? i've not been in hospital. how would you treat this ?

: Positive urine culture does not indicate antibiotic therapy is indicated. I wonder if you were treated empirically because of significant symptoms and if this culture was done for the first time. If not, what were the previous organisms? For bladder infection, we need to know the infection is recurrent or relapsed for the correct approach. You will be treated this time by the antibiogram result.

: You should see a urologist to see if there is something more going on than a simple bladder infection. You could have an infected kidney stone, for example, that needs to be treated for the infection to resolve. You will likely need further testing to determine the cause of the continued symptoms and the positive culture. Good luck!

have uti, (enterococcus faeglis.) been on cipro 4 days. still feel burning. i switched after 3 days on amoxicillin. not getting better even tho its sensitive to e. faeglis. is cipro becoming resistant? amoxicillin was slightly helping?

: If it was S to E.F. then you should have stayed on Cipro foe at least 7 days. If it S to amoxicillin take it for at least 7-10 days. Drink plenty of water. Good luck

Yes: Yes... Would reccomend treatment... Antibiotic of choice depends on culture and what it is sensitive to... Comes from poor hygiene and wiping stool into vaginal area and or rectal sex.

: You should have a kidney/ureter/bladder ultrasound to look for renal stones. Renal stones can be non-moving and thus, they don’t cause the typical pain. But, they can get infected and result in problems like this. The other possibility is that the bacteria are only partially treated with the antibiotic given-you should treat it with a different antibiotic and repeat the culture on the antibiotic.
