Prophylaxis: This is antibiotic therapy given before a procedure which may induce bacteria into the blood stream in a patient with pre-existing heart valve abnormalities.  There is very little evidence outside of some animal studies to suggest the efficacy of this, but it is often used because the doctor believes it is effective, or in fear of subsequent litigation if they fail to do so.

is there an alternate way to take prophylaxis for endocarditis during dental procedures? i am in the high risk category.- my dentist is not in for a week. i do not tolerate high doses of antibiotics, is it safe to split the dose to before and after?

: Yes. As long as you are covered with an antibiotic before as well as afterwards and the dental procedures are not that invasive. You could also consult your PCP until your dentist returns.

Premedicate before: Any invasive dental procedure should have a premeditated note on it if...You need to premedicate.  Ask your M.D.  Then tell your  dentist.  Nowadays a single dose 1hour prior to an appt. Is given. But...Your M.D.  May have other guidelines. Remember...Use antibiotics sparingly and only when needed, so they'll work well when you really do need them.  Earl.

Discuss w/ dentist : This is something that you need to have your dentist and physician discuss to determine what if any precautions must be determined. In all likelihood they will recommend the use of a pre treatment antibiotic but again that must be determined by these health care professionals.

Need more info: Why was a colonoscopy done at age 21? What were your symptoms? Biopsies are not normally part of this procedure. However, at age 21 there were likely reasons to biopsy if colitis was suspected

As : As a general rule of thumb, the more anesthesia you are under the higher the risks. If you are completely asleep the risks are higher than if you are sedated only and comfortable. To answer your question, it is not necessary to be fully asleep but you have to be comfortable so your doctor can actually complete the colonoscopy all the way to the begining of the colon.

: Some people find colonoscopy easily tolerable without sedation, others don't. Sedation is common because it often makes the procedure easier and quicker -- otherwise it can slow things down in order to keep discomfort to a minimum. A middle ground may be no sedation, but an IV in place so instant sedation can be used if needed. Discuss with the clinic or doctor doing the procedure.

NO: especially if the pathology report on the removed polyps is negative.

why cant i have red jello before my colonoscopy? my doctor said any clear liquid is fine, and red jello is clear. so whats wrong with it?

Red : Red (and purple) jell-o and other clear liquids with these colors can look like blood in the colon and also absorb the same wave length light that is needed to highlight the sometimes subtle color differences in the colon that we need to see in order to identify the pre-cancerous polyps that we are looking for when performing colonoscopy. It can make it more difficult to see these polyps, increasing the chances that something is missed.
