what would happen if someone undergone ect but didn't need it?

Likely nothing: How was it or should it be determined that they didn't "need it" if they were recommended it be done?  I'm thinking the psychiatrist made the recommendation.  I can't imagine a PMD such as an internist simply "ordering it" and that a psychiatrist would do it without an evaluation and agreeing that it was an appropriate intervention.

ECT: Much of the stigma attached to ECT is based on early treatments in which high doses of electricity were administered without anesthesia, leading to memory loss, fractured bones and other serious side effects.

Ect is much safer today and is given to people while they're under general anesthesia. Although ECT still causes some side effects, it now uses electrical currents given in a controlled sett.

Resetting brain: Ect is a controlled therapy in which electrical shocks are introduced into both temples to "reset' the brain.  A brief seizure is induced to reset the brain.  The hope is that the neurotransmitters in the brain will be released in the right ratios to "fix" depression.  Loss of interest is one of the features of depression.  It won't happen overnight but it might improve.
