i am a 27 year old female, 140 lbs with a slim neck and can see my right neck vein pulsing (not my left) anytime i lie down. my echo, carotid ultrasound and ecg were normal. should i run more tests?

: The carotid artery is a large artery &amp; I'm sure that's what you see pulsating. A normal carotid ultrasound is very reassuring. I assume you don't have high blood pressure which could accentuate carotid artery pulsations.  If you still have concerns, consult a vascular surgeon.

normal echo 18months ago. now have systolic murmur over aorta and carotid bruit. is it possible for damage to develop so quickly?could this be benign?

Unlikely : At your age it is unlikely the the carotid 'bruit' means anything is wrong.  The murmur is hard to evaluate without further testing.  

Non invasive eco testing could clear up most of your concerns and probably should be performed.

Calcium scoring: NO! Fix all the manageable risk factors and then sit back and enjoy the ride!.Absence of calcification does not guarantee immortality,imaging requires ionising radiation with no direct clinical benefit in you

You are afraid: You may have good reason or not, but i think your doctors can help you understand your conditions or lack of disease better. Ask them for information that is clear to you and also for a referral to a therapist to help you manage your disease anxiety. Understanding = help. If possible, avoid meds that will have side effects as they may just add to your worries. Best wishes.

: A modest suggestion:  your description sounds classically retinal in location.  Has anyone considered performing Optical Coherent Tomography?  Should a Neuro-ophthalmologist get involved at a nearby medical school?  (In a younger person, one might wonder about unusual migraine effects, i.e., an occipital cortex location.  Might see what an EEG could find?)

Delayed filling: The pulse wave in the carotid has an upstroke and a down stroke.
The up is the stroke volume filling the arteries, the down is the relaxation phase.
+1 refers to a decreased pulse
Therefore a carotid upstroke of +1 means, it is a delayed filling of the arteries

is it compulsory to do an echo test if you know it's a down syndrome baby?

Accepted Answer

No but recommended: Because many babies with down's syndrome also have cardiac or other anomalies, it is recommended to screen for those abnormalities in order to be prepared for the inherent problems at the time of delivery.
