what if ear drainage doesn't stop with 2 to 3 days for a ruptured ear drum while on amoxicillin. should i be concerned? or just let it take its time.

You need ear drops: An ear perforation with drainage needs to be treated with ear drops. Amoxicillin by itself probably won't do it. Contact your doctor for a prescription. I like ciprodex, however, this can be very expensive. A combination of generic Ciprofloxacin eye drops and Dexamethasone eye drops can also work well.

Likely : Probably need antibiotics.
May have obstructed eustachian tube from inflammation, then infection in middle ear, then drum perforation to drain out.

Probably: A middle ear infection that burst your ear drum and is draining may be a more aggressive infection.  Take the Amoxicillin as prescribed.  Your drainage should significantly improve in 2 to 3 days. In that case take all of the pills as recommended.  If not improving in a few days call the doctor,  you may need something stronger.  Call even sooner if you get a stiff neck or bad headache.

i have a ruptured ear drum & still have drainage since (4/4/2013) it's just not a lot of drainage. im taking amoxicillin 2 a day.should i be worried?

Try ear drops: A draining ear with a perforation responds much better to antibiotic ear drops than oral antibiotics unless there is also mastoid infection.  Suggest Floxin (ofloxacin) optic or Ciprodex , keep the ear dry.

: If you state you have an ear infection, than it must be treated. See an ENT specialist for exam and treatment ,don't try to self exam and treat. Infections spread and cause more harm if not treated.

Best to be seen: An eardrum rupture is usually a pinpoint perforation to let the infection out and most heal on their own with no problem. With a perforation though it is best to be seen...You may need antibiotic drops. The usual things i recommend for ear infections like garlic and willow oil cannot be used with a perforation. Chinese medicine can help and so can your doc.

Nothing genetic: I am not aware of any geneticly linked predisposition to ear drum rupture. The ear drum is tucked away in a strong bone protected from most outside events. Cupping injury( in a fight) or proximity to a blast might generate pressure waves that would rupture your drum. With any middle ear infection a rupture might occur & essentially all kids have them but not so many adults.

Ear drum rupture: Ear drum rupture could be traumatic or due to infection of the mioddle ear with increased middle ear pressure. Most heal on their own in a afew weeks. You should take care not to habve water go into your ears. The proximnity of the mioddle ear and inner ear to the brain can cause serious brain infections. Most ruptured drums are not to worry about though.

Not usually: It depends on the cause, but most of the time ruptured ear drums heal quite quickly and have no long term effects of hearing.

Usually...: ...Ear drops and watchful waiting. Once the problem that caused the rupture is resolved, most eardrums will heal on their own.
