No: If ear wax is occluding the ear canal it can affect the volume of sound but not the pitch.

Ear plugs: Some people are particularly sensitive to loud noises, and if you are, you should wear ear plugs during loud events.

May have hyperacusis: There is a condition called hyperacusis in which certain sounds can be painful. Sometimes it can occur in patients with underlying hearing loss. I recommend you see an ENT doctor to have a hearing test and an ear exam.

Tinnitus: High pitched ringing is tinnitus, a sensation created by the brain when insufficient or abnormal signal sent from the ear (like phantom leg syndrome). It is experienced by persons with normal hearing exposed to silence. It persists after severing the auditory nerve. If occurring less than 3 weeks and stable, then suspect noise exposure, head trauma, wax, medication side effect, infection, TMJ.

You are describing: the response of the ear to a noxious injury LOUD SOUNDS are the most common (eg a gunshot etc) I suppose intense cold could damage as well but you have to check this with
an Audiologist!!  Ask your Primary Care Provider for a referral!

Possible: Unusual for viral illness to cause unilateral ear ringing (tinnitus), but some of the meds taken for a cold more often can cause tinnitus (eg NSAIDS or antibiotics).  Even excessive earwax and eardrum irritation can result in ringing.There are many other potential causes, which warrants discussion with a physician.  Rarely, unilateral tinnitus can be due to tumor or blood vessel problem.

i'm experiencing slight sound distortion in my left ear (long term issue). i noticed it because louder high pitched sounds can be painful. what is it?

Both: Both high and low frequency noises can be damaging to one's hearing if loud enough, or if exposed to long enough. Haven't seen any research studies comparing each to determine which is more damaging. It's sort of like comparing lemons to limes... hard to find a difference. Anyway, one should wear good hearing protection  if exposed to loud noises. For comfort, avoid sounds that sound irritating.
